Since my last update, I have done a ton of work on the book. It is closer than ever to being “done,” which I put in quotes because I mean having a solid first edition to release to my students and other interested people as a test-run. Getting feedback about it from people I already work with should help get it road-ready for broader publication.
I have purposely stayed away from thinking much about the “book launch,” but we’re getting nearer to that point. It has been helpful to focus primarily on the writing of the book. This fits my wheelhouse: writing, creating, thinking, sharing with my students.
I share ideas from the book with my students just about every day. For instance, last night I had a “Drop In” session, where any students who want can join me on Zoom for sort of open office hours. A student was asking about the Circle of Fifths, a music theory concept. Since I talk about the Circle of Fifths in the book, I shared a diagram from the book on screen while we were talking. Similarly, two days ago I had students in my Piano Improv class take a self-assessment of their piano improv skills. This was also directly from the book.
I have loved sharing the book during lessons. It is a great way to get actual feedback from exactly the folks I’m writing the book for: piano learners. I have had dozens of conversations with my students about it in some form or another. Trying out the book’s content on them has helped me keep my ear to the ground as I write it. I also believe staying open helps maximize the book’s practical value.
Sharing with others will continue helping me as I figure out the next steps. I picture an actual physical book–though it will probably start as a digital book. I see the book helping me broaden my audience as a teacher. I also picture moving into online courses in some way, though this idea is still germinating.
Most of all, I am excited to be on the journey and eager to see what’s in store!
