Ok so tonight’s post is being done by candlelight on my iPad. I only did one other post on my iPad since I started this 365 Day Blogging Project, and that was when I went to my brother’s wedding in Oakland last September. No, tonight I’m on the iPad for a very different reason: the power went out. Hence the candles.
Turns out, a power outage can have many advantages for one’s social life if one is open. One of our more sociable neighbors decided to drop in and declare an unofficial soirée at our place, with me playing the piano, joined by one other neighbor and a friend of the first neighbor. I was happy to oblige… Er, well mostly happy lol. I can be a little touchy if I think people are telling me what to do, lol, but in fact, this neighbor is quite fun, and it was nice to hear from her. She’s the type of person who is good at bringing people together, and also seems to know all the neighbors (something I don’t think is true for any of the rest of us–we know her, but don’t much seem to know each other). Also, this seemed like a fun little impromptu social gathering, the kind that only happens because of a power outage knocking away people’s usual Internet connectivity.
It was quite a nice little time. I played piano, and the sociable neighbor’s friend told a few jokes from his stand up routine he just tried out at a local comedy open mic. He did this at our neighbor’s repeated urgings despite his reluctance. Clearly she is very good at inviting fun participation from other people. We need people like this, otherwise, very often people would just stand around at parties not connecting. Or live in a building for years and know each other. Guilty as charged, your honor.
Eventually, after some cheerful banter accompanied by me practicing some music for a show I’m doing, I got to play concertmaster. First, I performed some Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata) by request of our other neighbor, and then played some originals. I greatly enjoyed the chance to play my music. It was so nice to have an appreciative audience! More of that please 🌞
As all this was going on, I worked out how to log onto WordPress to write this post on my iPad–turns out it stored my password from the last time I logged, so i wasnt left in the lurch without a device to write from ( my password is otherwise only stored on my desktop, which of course is off because of the outage).
I really enjoyed this break from monotony! In fact, I think it was just what the doctor ordered! Thank you Universe for providing unexpected fun social opportunities. More please!
