It’s funny how inspiration shows up at different times, and in different ways. Yesterday my wife was working on a video showcasing some scarves she designed. She asked me if I could write some music for it. She has asked me for such things before, and often I have obliged. This time was no different. I immediately had an idea for a piece, so I went to the piano and recorded myself playing for about a minute or so. Later, when I was done with my lessons, and had completed my blog post (of course), I spent several hours finishing up the piece, a short twinkly diddy I call “Sparkle Magical” (in honor of the lady who inspired it, who both sparkles and is magical).
Let me clarify that when I say I had an idea for the piece, I didn’t know exactly what it was I was going to do. I just had a sense that I had something. Think of it like a little tickle, an instinct. Sure enough, I was right.
I am learning to flow the natural ebb and flow of inspiration. I actually have regular access to inspiration. Yet sometimes it shows up in different ways, and sometimes in more pronounced ways.
Over the past ten months, a lot of my creative energy has gone into this blog, as well as cafe writing. I haven’t composed a whole lot of music. I haven’t been that concerned about it actually. Just doing other things creatively. Last night felt like fruit had dropped from the tree ready to eat, like the crops on the field I had left fallow were ready for harvesting.
This morning was a continuation of last night’s inspiration. I awoke with yet another idea, and though it 5am and I had no particular need to get up, I did so in order to capture my idea. I started by writing notes down by hand, then I got on the computer and started typing. Later, I started composing the first song idea on the computer using Finale.
Needless to say, I’m enjoying living la Vida Creative!
